Tryouts

Eligibility

Tryouts will be held to fill multiple people for both Big Jay and Baby Jay. To try out for Big Jay, you must be 6'1" to 6'5" and fit into the Big Jay costume. To try out for Baby Jay, you must be 4'11" to 5'1" and fit into the Baby Jay costume. All candidates must be full-time KU students (enrolled in 12 credit-hours for undergrads; typically 9 credit-hours for grad students), or incoming freshmen or transfers who have already applied and been admitted to KU.

Scholarships

Mascots receive $300/semester plus an additional $50 if GPA is over 3.0 for that semester. Mascots also receive payment for some appearances.

Tryout process

Tryouts for the 2012-13 squad will be April 21/22, 2012. Submit the tryout packet (.pdf) by April 16. At tryouts, candidates should wear comfortable presentable athletic clothes (shorts and a t-shirt) and shoes.

All tryout participants are required to perform an original skit that is less than 2-minutes in length that comes complete with a theme, props and music/sound effects. In addition to the skit, participants will be judged on improvisational skills, Rock Chalk Chant, and Fight Song. Please keep in mind that Big Jay and Baby Jay are family friendly which means that everything must be tasteful. Mascots will be selected based on their appropriateness and entertainment value.

National competition

If Big Jay or Baby Jay earns a bid to compete at UCA College Nationals, Kansas Athletics will pay for fees and transportation to and from the national competition with the aid of required fund raising obligations by team members.
